I’ve been saying for years that one of my biggest goals as an artist is to get to know and be in touch with the people who make up my fan base. It will be because of them that I succeed in my musical endeavors and I want to be able to stay in contact regularly. I want to know who you are and I want you know exactly who I am as well. So I’ve decided to dedicate this weeks post to telling you exactly who I am and what makes me tick. The ins and outs of Kate McRae. Then, I want you to feel like you can email, message, or tweet me and just have a conversation where I get to know you as well. That’s what life is about!… Building relationships and creating a network of support to build you up as you journey through life. If you are going to do that for me, I want to be able to do that for you as well. So here is my story.
I was born in Bartlesville, OK but moved to Longview, Texas just after my 5th birthday. I am definitely a Texas girl at heart. I went to the same school from Kindergarden through high school. Good ol’ Spring Hill. It was a small school in a small town in east Texas. Everyone knew everyone else and thought they knew everything about them as well. It was a bit of a gossip town just because there wasn’t a whole lot to do there otherwise. It was a beautiful place to grow up and a very family friendly town. However, if you weren’t planning to settle down right away or go to work in the oil fields, it had the possibility of being a quicksand town. Since there really isn’t much of a music industry in the backwoods of northeast Texas, and all I wanted to do was sing and write music, I knew I had to leave. I moved to Nashville at age 18.
I always had a deep love of music. I grew up singing in church with my dad. He led the music for out contemporary worship service and I got involved as soon as possible. I was involved in band and choir in school. I went to every competition, event, and rehearsal I could. Always busy, always learning, always working hard. But that is just my personality. I was that way with my academics all the way through college as well. If I wanted to learn something, I was going to master it. If I wanted to do something, I was going to set a record. If I was going to be someone, I was going to be the very best person I could be. Although most of the time I am very glad that I am wired this way, sometimes I wish I could take the time to stop and just enjoy what is around me more often. In college, I worked so hard, I almost missed those college years that everyone says to enjoy. I graduated from Belmont University in Nashville, TN with a B.S. in Songwriting and a B.M. in Music Education. I now call Nashville home. However, I do talk to my folks every day and miss Texas very much.
My family is amazing. My mom is my best friend. She is supportive, smart, funny, and would go to the ends of the earth to help me with anything. My dad is my biggest fan. He instilled such a love of music in me and now is sharing my music with everyone else. They are both so creative and more talented than either of them give themselves credit for! I am so blessed to have parents who raised my to be a respectful, caring, southern lady who uses her brain and has a good sense of humor. I also have an older brother, Nate. When we were young, we were mistaken for twins a lot. (Partially due to the name rhyming thing). He is the smartest, most fun, most genuine person that I know. I’m a lucky girl to have them all in my corner.
I’m sure many of you know this, but I also have an amazing dog named Tucker. He is a border collie mix, very smart, and very loving. I treat him way to much like a human child, but in my defense I think he believes he is one. I also firmly believe that he can fully understand the English language. You can tell him just about anything, and he seems to understand exactly what you want.
So to wrap it up: I am a determined, caring, intelligent southern belle with a deep love of music. I would do anything for the people in my life and I work hard to succeed at anything I take on. I sincerely want to get to know my fans and supporters, so please take a second to send me an email, tweet, or message. Let’s talk!
